TRIATHLON SPRINT EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS MALMÖ Canceled due to Covid-19.
We have closely monitored the development in society but have now reached a point where a decision on the event needed to be made. At this moment, it is forbidden to arrange events of our size and our international participants are advised not to travel to Sweden. Unfortunately, given the prevailing circumstances, there is no other option than to cancel the European Championships in Malmö.
”Of course, we find this decision very sad, especially since after years of preparatory work we would finally have the pleasure of welcoming participants from all over Europe to a fantastic European Championship in Malmö, a real triathlon party. We hope that in the future we will have this opportunity again” says Jesper Svensson, chairman of the board at the Swedish Triathlon Association.
“Many people have put in a lot of time and commitment over the years and worked hard to get to the European Championships in Malmö. It is with heavy heart that we have to deliver this message." says Üve Hillep, Race Director and Event Manager at the Swedish Triathlon Association.
The situation that we are facing with canceled competitions is very sad for everyone, participants as organizers. We all have looking forward to this summer's competitions and events. However, we must put health first and follow the recommendations that are given in these situations.
The Swedish Triathlon Association is very proud to be one of the sports associations in Sweden that are able to manage a high proportion of self-funding. The fact that we succeeded in this is largely due to our competitions, the revenue registration fees and the collaborations with our partners that are created. It has given us the opportunity to develop our sport in a fantastic way the last decade.
When we now have to cancel almost all competitions this summer, this means a major financial setback for all ours sections such as children and youth, para and elite. Partly because a large part of the revenue is lost, and partly because many costs are already incurred. It basically affects the overall economy for our association. We simply do not have the opportunity to pay back the registration fees that have been received. We understand that the situation is far from optimal and we want as a compensation give the opportunity for a new registration fee in 2021.
All registered to Open Race at Malmö triathlon are offered two options:
1. Remit the registration fee in favor of the non-profit triathlon organization in Sweden.
2. Postpone the registration to either MAXI Linköping Triathlon 2021 (prel. Date in June) or to Stockholm Triathlon 2021 (prel. Date 22/8). This because the large uncertainty regarding a possible event in Malmö 2021. If the Malmö Triathlon will be arranged in 2021 it will of course be possible to move the registration fee.

For those who are registered in the Age Group class can choose between repayment of the registration fee or remit the registration fee into our non-profit triathlon organization in Sweden. The link to the Age Group is emailed separately.
